Literature Text

Canyons on your young skin
feel like bark against my fingers
sharper spears couldn't hurt
the way those scars severed us so

Your frozen face searches
For some sort of warmth—a small smile
But bullets break more trust
Than skin

People persist to claim
The tantrums will not go away
Shattered glass and dishes
Results of a too loud tv

You said I had soft skin
When you screamed swears all at the air
About made-up monsters
And pain

You are rough sandpaper
Filing away my love and hope
That you will be the man
That used to calm my temper down

What that gun did to you
Did more than make skin uneven
Can't you see I'm trying
To help

My mind's calculating
The next time you will snap and scream
Attempting to prevent
The certain cause for disaster

Time always changed people
But few know what trauma can do
Until it forces you
To change
Decided to write a poem for a contest that's theme was texture. Also, it's a sadder poem, but it isn't angst. It's a story so many families deal with after their spouse or father comes home from war: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I usually don't write about things like this (especially since I don't know anyone who has this), but I saw a movie some time ago, and I guess it inspired me to write this.

For twr:

Was the flow right?
Did this portray the right emotions?
Was there good imagery?

Now, I'm no writer/poet/literature-y person, but this poem for me is both sad and wonderful. I love the images used and all the words blend together nicely. Like BittersweetObsession, I love this part:

"But bullets break more trust
Than skin"
