I'm sure a lot you have noticed the "glitch" that scrambled all the popular art off the popular page here on Deviantart.  HOWEVER, what a lot of deviants have failed to realize is the fact that it IS NOT a glitch, but a whole new system on Deviantart that is supposedly been made to help support "under-appreciated and more unusual types of art". So, instead of getting Homestuck fan-art, :iconyuumei:'s art, :iconmoni158:'s art, or even :icontompreston:'s comics (as well as countless other great art from artists like :iconhumon: and :iconloish:), you end up getting weird vectors, fractals, and miscellaneous category stuff from artists you've rarely even heard mentioned.

An important note to bear in mind is the fact that it's not about the unfair spread of attention. The front page, popular section is supposed to be EXACTLY that. If you want to be popular, you should earn it like everyone else before you did. Gathering followers, favorites,views... it's hard work. Which is why the popular page was both mystifying and rewarding. Before this mess, when one of my pieces of art got fourth page of 8 hours most popular, I was so amazed and excited the community chose my art to be there. (Also, when one of my deviations got so many views when I was asleep about a year ago, I couldn't help but feel really proud and shocked at the idea of my work being on the front page.) I worked hard for that, just like all the actual popular artists work hard to get their spots. Knowing this, how is it fair for something that has only a small amount of favorites and isn't even that good to be on the front page? It's not.

Now, this idea (what they've changed the "popular" section to) would be seriously really cool as a third choice. "Newest","Random/Under-appreciated", and "popular" sectors just make more sense. And, if the "Random" folder stayed the same every hour or two, it could offer great exposure opportunity, while keeping the beloved popular folder popular.

What DOES confuse me though is this: On the popular tabs, you can narrow it down, so if people really wanted, they could just go there; this has always been a thing.  So, honestly, it's not like vectors got no attention. Why did deviantart even change it? I mean, the option to view popular things inside a category and seeing the popular overall as well makes so much sense. Not to mention, I used to go to the front page and study and try to examine anatomy, color usage and art concepts. Now, I can't even do that.

A lot of deviants also felt that Deviantart's sense of community and competition out-matched so many other art sites. Deviantart encouraged people to keep pushing and get better through a lot of things, mainly the Popular pages. Now that that's gone too, where will be the push for improvement? No one. Now people go to tumblr and other blog/ art sites, and its sad to think about what Deviantart used to be. Music, News, Journals being Journals, no Sta.sh, actual popular stuff...and you wonder who's brilliant idea it was to even do all this.

Although I am NOT popular, this is ridiculous and needs to be stopped. So let us all band together! If we all stand up and express our views about this enough, they might change it in fear of losing their members.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
-Fav this journal to spread the word!
-Write another journal to also spread the word!
-Make suggestions to change it back, whether privately to staff or publicly to the others here.

I agree with this.
I think a third option will be great.
When the "unpopular" deviations came up, the first thing I thought of was, "The familiar deviants in the popular section are there for a reason. They worked hard to earn that position."
Because they really did. One of my favorite dA artists, *Naimane, started off with really beginner art (I hope she doesn't take offense that I say this) but in just a year or so, her art improved drastically, and she gained popularity because she deserves it.
/rant I don't know how to conclude this... I feel like I've written an essay or something xD
